The naming of the Opel Olympia

Opel carmakers made a unique family car that was to hit the Germany motor industry. This revolutionary vehicle was given the name Olympia due to the anticipated 1935 Olympic Games in Berlin. This was a great marketing strategy to introduce the car into the world market. Indeed it was received with much appreciation. It proved to be an asset due to the volumes of sales that were witnessed through the years from 1935 to late 1950s.

The name Opel Olympia was used for the model until 1957 when the vehicle acquired a different body. It then referred to as the Opel Olympia Rekord. These names were used together but the Olympia name was completely dropped in 1957 leaving it as Opel Rekord. Many saw this as the end of the Opel Olympia until it was revived ten years later as Opel Olympia A. Opel’s efforts to get the vehicle back seemed futile for this new vehicle did not do well in the market. Three years after its inception that is in 1970, a more modern model called the Opel Ascona replaced it.

The Opel Rekord continued to change and acquire newer names. Other motor makers such as Chevrolet and Ford also adapted it in producing their models.
